Get Your Groove on with a Custom Double Angle Shank Cutter

A double-angle shank cutter is a mouthful to talk about, so you can refer to it as the Swiss army knife of the machining world, if that’s easier. Due to its versatility, this singular tool can handle chamfering, back chamfering, “V” groove milling, deburring, countersinking, and even thread milling. These tools are a special variation of keyseat cutters, allowing for even more precise grooves in trickier parts. That’s where Aronson-Campbell Custom Grinding comes in, ready and able to create the perfect tool to handle your trickiest jobs.

The Crucial Angle

The strength of this cutter (in comparison to a regular keyseat cutter) is found in its included angle. Instead of being able to cut just one direction or angle at a time, machinists can create double-angled grooves. On top of that, thanks to Aronson-Campbell Custom Grinding, you can choose the exact angle you need for your job. We can machine any included angle between 30° and 150°.

Other Dimensions to Consider

Need a really wide diameter on your shank cutter for the job at hand? Need an incredibly delicate one for some really fine machining? We’ve got you covered. Double-angle shank cutters sold in the U.S. market start at the smallest practical size of 1/16″ (.0625″) and move right on up from there, graduated in .001″ increments, so that you can get exactly the size you need, down to the thousandth of an inch. Talk about custom service! That’s the Aronson-Campbell difference.

Another key element that makes a double angle shank cutter so useful for highly specific jobs is the ability to customize the radial depth of cut. By creating a tool to the exact dimension you need, you can rest assured that it will be able to handle exactly what you’ll be using it for.

Most shank cutters have nominal shank sizes, with 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 probably making up 90% of the cutters we make. The European / worldwide market dictates that we also make them with the standard metric sizes, which we can do easily.

Thoughts on Materials

For your double-angle shank cutter, you can choose between HSS (M2), Cobalt (M42), or carbide. This last choice allows cutters to stay sharper longer, making more parts for you before resharpening is necessary. If you need a super finely honed cutting edge, though, you may want to choose tool steel for the best results.
